Notable Particulars

  • Vintage 1980s Boss DD-2 Digital Delay, made in Japan
  • Historically significant as Boss's first compact digital delay pedal
  • Three delay-time ranges plus Hold mode for flexible echo effects
  • Independent Effect Level, Feedback and Delay Time controls
  • Stereo output capability for spacious two-amp and recording setups

The Details

The Boss DD-2 Digital Delay is one of those splendid little boxes where effects-pedal history took a sharp turn into the future. Introduced in 1983, it was Boss's first compact digital delay and brought technology related to the company's larger rack delay designs into the familiar stompbox format.

Its straightforward four-control layout makes it wonderfully immediate. Effect Level sets the balance of delayed signal, Feedback determines the number of repeats, Delay Time adjusts the echo spacing, and the Mode control selects different delay ranges or Hold operation. The pedal also provides mono and stereo output connections, opening the door to wide dual-amp and studio configurations.

The DD-2 became known for its clear, articulate repeats while retaining a distinctly early-digital personality that separates it from many modern, ultra-pristine delays. It was produced for only a relatively short period before the closely related DD-3 succeeded it, making original DD-2 examples particularly appealing to collectors and players interested in landmark Boss effects.

This example is a vintage Made in Japan unit and shows substantial cosmetic wear consistent with age and use, including chips, scratches and wear to the underside label, all plainly visible in the photographs. Rather splendid battle scars for a pedal from the dawn of compact digital delay.
