The Details
The Jay Turser Shark is one of those gloriously improbable guitars that makes an ordinary double-cutaway look desperately underdressed. Produced as part of Jay Turser's Modern Series, the JT-Shark combines a sculpted shark-shaped solid body with a dramatic Mako-inspired finish, complete with teeth, eye, dorsal fins and a tail-shaped headstock. Contemporary references date the model to around the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Underneath the marine biology is a genuinely usable electric guitar. This version carries an HSS pickup arrangement, with two single-coil pickups and a bridge humbucker, selected through a 5-way switch. Master Volume and Tone controls keep matters pleasantly simple, while the tremolo bridge provides further expressive possibilities.
The bolt-on maple neck is paired with a rosewood fingerboard and distinctive shark-fin style position markers. The reverse reveals the wonderfully enormous tail-fin headstock and black tuning machines, while the front carries the Jay Turser "Shark" script logo.
This example presents particularly well in the photographs, with its deep blue/green Mako colouring, chrome hardware and gloriously toothy artwork all making quite an impression. Please inspect the supplied photographs carefully for the precise cosmetic condition.
Uncommon, playable and utterly impossible to ignore, this is equally tempting as a stage guitar, conversation piece or addition to a collection of wonderfully peculiar instruments. I have encountered many strange beasts in the guitar jungle, but few look quite so ready to bite the drummer.
