This Tokai Goldstar has clearly been on a few expeditions. Once dressed in red metallic, now stripped back to natural wood, it’s a Japanese S-style player with history, scars, charm and a fine set of stamped single coils under the bonnet.

The Details

A very cool Tokai Goldstar Sound S-style electric guitar, made in Japan and carrying the classic “Oldies but Goldies” Tokai headstock decal.

This one has plenty of vintage Japanese S-Style charm, with a maple neck and fingerboard, three single-coil pickups, vintage-style tremolo, and a 3-ply mint/green pickguard. The pickups appear to be period Tokai-style grey-bottom single coils with stamped markings, giving it that lively, articulate "S" character these Japanese Tokais are known for.

The body has clearly had a life. The outside is now in a natural finish, while red metallic finish remains visible in the cavities, so we are describing this as a natural refinish / stripped body. There are various marks, knocks, finish wear and signs of previous work, as shown in the photos. The electronics and shielding have also been worked on at some point, so we are not presenting this as an all-original collector-grade example.

What it is, though, is a very characterful Japanese Tokai player’s Strat with bags of vibe, a great look, and desirable Tokai heritage.
