The Details

The Yamaha EZ-EG is one of those marvellous instruments that could only have escaped from Yamaha’s more adventurous laboratory. Shaped like an electric guitar but built around digital technology, it combines six strumming strings with an electronic fretboard and onboard sound generation.

Rather than pressing conventional strings against frets, the neck uses dedicated fret buttons. The six strings across the body are then picked or strummed, creating an unusual halfway house between guitar technique and electronic control.

The onboard controls provide access to different voices and playing functions, while MIDI In and Out allow the EZ-EG to venture beyond its internal sounds and control external MIDI equipment. There is also a headphone/output connection for private practice or connection to other audio equipment.

This example has the natural wood-effect finish and shows signs of previous use, including various marks and cosmetic wear to the body. Please study the photographs carefully for condition.

An intriguing find for MIDI experimenters, electronic musicians, collectors of unusual Yamaha gear, or guitarists seeking something decidedly different. It looks rather like a guitar brought back from an alternate 1980s future, which, in Mo’s book, is an excellent place to begin.
